Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

It seems even the French can make a mediocre romantic comedy, although Alexandre Castagnetti does at least have the excuse that his film is based on an original script by an American, Vincent Angell. The premise is preposterously straightforward. Sculptress Ludivine Sagnier is on a flight from New York to Paris to get married, but has her head turned en route by the lawyer (Nicolas Bedos) she dumped three years earlier for being an unregenerate cad. He hasn't changed one iota and each of the film's many flashbacks makes him seem even more contemptible. So it's difficult to sympathise with Sagnier, as not only did she go out with him in the first place, but she is now all-too-willing to be seduced by his chauvinist shtick all over again. Castagnetti works well with editor Scott Stevenson in fashioning montages and recollections that often slip ingeniously back into the present. But the situation is thuddingly familiar (and the insertion of Kama Sutra tableaux hardly helps), while the typically intelligent Sagnier's attempts at elfin eccentricity are swamped by the boorishness of Bedos's character.
