Review

A star rating of 1 out of 5.

Atom Egoyan's regular cinematographer Paul Sarossy makes his directorial debut with this disappointing adaptation of Neil Cross's novel. Much of the problem lies in Peter Waddington's plodding script and the lifeless performance of Andrew Howard as the dispassionate hitman whose ruthless streak is softened by a chance re-acquaintance with the object of his teenage affection, Geraldine O'Rawe. But the pitilessly sadistic sequences involving gentleman bad guys David Calder (whose purple pronouncements are risibly stylised), Saeed Jaffrey and Clive Russell also undermine Sarossy's attempts to imbue proceedings with a sense of pessimistic realism. Unquestionably, another nail in the coffin of British crime flicks.
