Drama starring Jeff Goldblum and Forest Whitaker. Saxophonist Al Gorky and trumpeter Buddy Chester are top session men in New York who enjoy the lush life playing jazz in smoky clubs and returning home in the early hours. But all that changes when Buddy is diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. With only a month to live, Buddy wants to throw one last party dedicated to the music he loves.
Having made his name playing Charlie Parker in Clint Eastwood's outstanding biopic Bird, Forest Whitaker is back blowing his own trumpet in this well-above-average TV movie. Jeff Goldblum co-stars as his sax-playing partner, living life to the full around the smoky clubs of New York, until Whitaker is diagnosed as having a brain tumour and given only a month to live. But if you've gotta go, then what better way than with the mother of all jazz gigs. A little melancholy in places, but the stars make a fine team and Lennie Niehaus's music will keep your toes tapping.
