Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Nabil Ayouch's music-driven performing arts school drama is an energetic love letter to a real-life art centre that the director's foundation helped to set up. Students at Casablanca's Sidi Moumen centre play versions of themselves as their characters learn to express their thoughts and feelings through rap, under the watchful eye of teacher Anas (Anas Basbousi). The Moroccan setting may be fresh but the plot is familiar, as the group prepares for a concert, and Ayouch tackles a handful of hot-button topics, including religion, extremism and equality, along the way. The performance elements of the film are a treat, with Ayouch jettisoning the naturalism for more stylised sections, including a stunning rooftop dance and a sibling row that sees a sister rip into her brother through song. These moments bristle with youthful enthusiasm and talent, fuelled by the likeable cast. However, the characters' back stories are rather perfunctory and longer classroom sections slow down the pace.
