Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Already an established figure within Japanese cinema, Kenji Mizoguchi's protégé, Kaneto Shindo, garnered international acclaim for this austere study of the struggle for survival of a family farming a wild, isolated island. Always willing to experiment with theme and form, Shindo eliminated speech from this intense drama, as if to suggest both the couple's intuitive unity of purpose and the unjustifiable expenditure of effort when all their energies were needed to work the intractable land and fetch fresh water from the mainland. Forbiddingly photographed by Kiyoshi Kuroda, although there's a lingering suspicion that the rustic poetry is somewhat contrived.
