Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Originality is jettisoned in favour of creepy atmospherics in this seen-it-all-before first feature from Spanish film-maker Carles Torrens. Unevenly scripted by Buried director Rodrigo Cortés, the compact, fly-on-the-wall chiller plays like Paranormal Activity meets Poltergeist, as three parapsychologists explore the apparently supernatural disturbances plaguing widower Kai Lennox and his two children in their gloomy and increasingly oppressive home. Extreme shaky-cam visuals and twitchy editing create a rising sense of disorientation and tension, with a well-used found footage-style format showing the clichéd and ultimately unconvincing events through the lenses of the investigators' surveillance devices. Strong sound design produces lazy jolts from nothing but bangs, flying objects and breaking glass, while a truly traumatised-looking Lennox adds a splash of ambiguity and emotion to the otherwise minimalist story.
