Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This engaging thriller based on a true story plays out almost entirely on a computer screen. Freelance journalist Amy (Valene Kane) has set up a fake Facebook profile, and is posing as a teenage Muslim convert in an attempt to lure Isis into recruiting her. She soon has her man in Abu Bilel Al-Britani (Shazad Latif), a Londoner now out in Syria waging holy war. A game of cat and mouse ensues, with Amy trying to ensnare Al-Britani while juggling windows and tabs, phoning IT, firing off emails and taking calls from her boyfriend. It's a story as much about modern reliance on technology as it is about the precariousness of 21st-century journalism, which means that the jihad element gets slightly lost in the mix. The film is quite a departure for director Timur Bekmambetov (Ben-Hur), but he pulls it off, and is well served by Kane and Latif, whose chemistry is the film's greatest asset.
