Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Scientists attempt to harness the inner energy of the Earth and get it all wrong in this moderate sci-fi thriller. Director Andrew Marton - who was responsible for the chariot race in Ben-Hur - knows how to milk this kind of thing, and no one looks more worried about the end of the world than tight-lipped Dana Andrews, who had to deal with a similar scale of problem in The Satan Bug the same year. Among the cast, Alexander Knox brings a touch of class to the proceedings, while Janette Scott and Kieron Moore reprise their double act from The Day of the Triffids. The effects just about pass muster, though they may look familiar to fans of other movies in the genre, notably Master of the World.
