This is one of those movies that leaves you feeling unsure what it was about. The basic plot of a Japanese businessman, apparently involved in a road accident, who suddenly finds himself turning into a metallic mutant monster, is merely an excuse for cult Japanese director Shinya Tsukamoto to bombard the viewer with surreal and nightmarish images of violence and sex. Tsukamoto, who not only directed but also wrote, filmed and played one of the leads, has obviously read too many adult comic books and rented Eraserhead more times than is healthy. Employing grainy black-and-white photography, minimal dialogue and a pounding techno soundtrack, this (for many blessedly) short feature will be seen either as pretentious rubbish or a classy art movie. A sequel followed in 1991.
