Women film-makers from around the world provide seven short films for this project, and the eclectic mixture of voices is fascinating. Opener Pepcy & Kim, based on a true story, sees Jennifer Hudson delivering a searing, twitchy performance as a jailed drug addict. The real-world impact of the pandemic on LA's homeless is tackled in Elbows Deep, with Marcia Gay Harden as a doctor and Cara Delevingne a troubled drifter. In another real-life dramatisation, Unspoken, Margherita Buy's vet treats an injured dog in effectively tense circumstances, while the somewhat unfocused Sharing a Ride sees an Indian woman overcome prejudice to make a friend. Aria, an animated paean to freedom, has little new to say, and in Lagonegro, Eva Longoria isn't given much to chew on as a childless woman faced with a new family member. However, director Mipo Oh absolutely soars with A Week in My Life, a sweet and simple tale of a Japanese mother (Anne Watanabe) and her chaotic home.
