Reena is a young, gay Indian-American woman who lives and works in New York. Her sister Sarita, who is married, discovers that she is infertile. Reena offers to be a surrogate mother for her sister's baby, hoping to improve her relationship with their mother, who disapproves of Reena's sexual orientation. Reena has second thoughts when her girlfriend Lisa feels left out.
Nisha Ganatra impresses as star, director and co-writer of this acute comedy, which draws surprising parallels between Indian and lesbian mores. Despite success as a photographer and romantic contentment with partner Jill Hennessy, Ganatra's 20-something New Yorker is perturbed by an inability to please her mother, Madhur Jaffrey - even after she offers to carry a baby for her favoured, but infertile sister (played by Sakina Jaffrey, Madhur's real-life daughter). Although her camera lingers on henna tattooes for symbolic and erotic effect, Ganatra avoids forcing either the domestic, cultural or sexual issues and, consequently, both the drama and the comedy remain as credible and unpredictable as the performances.
