A heinous crime tests the complex relationship between a tenacious personal assistant and her Hollywood starlet boss. As the assistant unravels the mystery, she must confront her own understanding of friendship, truth and celebrity.
Hollywood's narcissistic, petty underbelly is laid bare in this quirky whodunnit. The reluctant protagonist is Jill (Lola Kirke), the personal assistant to a famous movie star (Zoë Kravitz), who finds herself scouring LA's neon nightclubs and decadent abodes for the truth after her boss is involved in a shocking crime. The darkly comic mystery can become obsessed with a desire to expose the film industry rather than further the plot, and while the story makes valid points about the price of fame, these musings slow the pace to a crawl. However, Kravitz is a great screen presence, and it's fun to watch Kirke bicker with self-absorbed artists. The film also has a secret weapon in John Cho, who is excellent as the eccentric cop intent on proving that Jill had something to do with the crime. The third act reveal may be slightly unsatisfying, but Gemini is still a stylish attempt to modernise a well-worn genre.
