Review
This Oscar-nominated, definitive documentary about the father of the new South Africa benefits immeasurably from having much of it fronted by Mandela himself. Afforded apparently unlimited access to the man and his mind, the film-makers trace Mandela's life from his humble village origins, through his early ANC involvement and subsequent lengthy incarceration by the country's white minority government, right up to his very public distancing from troublesome second wife Winnie. Particularly moving are Mandela's returns to the village of his birth and the cell where he was imprisoned for almost three decades.
