Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The concluding part of the "flamenco trilogy" that began with Blood Wedding and Carmen may be the least successful of the three, but there is still much to admire in Carlos Saura's highly stylised production. His use of artifice is particularly strong, and he deploys only a handful of props to transform a deserted sound stage into a vibrant shanty town. Against this background, a tale of doomed gypsy romance unfolds, with a woman torn between the spirit of her dead husband and the attentions of his convicted murderer. Teo Escamilla's photography enhances both Gerardo Vera's costume designs and Antonio Gades's choreography, but the non-musical passages are heavy-going.
