Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Bored with corporate politics, Tom Smothers abandons his conformist job to become an itinerant tap-dancing magician, with a little help from Orson Welles. He soon finds that his change of lifestyle hasn't freed him from the exploitative, money-obsessed world he is trying to escape. Director Brian De Palma's first big-budget feature is an overlong, uninspired parable for the time, with stagey performances from Smothers, Katharine Ross and Orson Welles. A banal black comedy of social mores, this was edited against De Palma's wishes and only a few flashes of the visual talent he would soon build on remain.
