Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This solid film noir stars Gig Young as a public defender who sets out to prove the innocence of an escaped convict (James Anderson), who was wrongly accused of murder 12 years earlier. Despite the assistance of his retired cop father (Harry Shannon), he faces obstacles tracking down the seven other people present on the night of the shooting, with each suspect having undergone big changes in their own lives. Low on action and heavy on dialogue, DeVallon Scott's screenplay may have fared better as a theatrical play, but it's full of quotable lines and skilfully dispenses its plot twists. Young is the model of steely determination, while Shannon lightens the mood as his breezy, been-there-done-that dad.
