A star rating of 2 out of 5.
Terry Staunton
The fourth film to star Lloyd Nolan as private detective Michael Shayne finds the wisecracking gumshoe promising his sweetheart (Mary Beth Hughes) he'll find more reputable work if she agrees to marry him. He takes a job at an aircraft factory, which is then robbed of its industrial diamonds, leading Shayne to suspect the involvement of an inside man and a German spy. The stage is set for a yarn full of unlikely plot twists and a conclusion most viewers will see coming from the first tip of Shayne's fedora. Nolan and Hughes have robust comic chemistry that is reminiscent of William Powell and Myrna Loy in the Thin Man series of crime capers, only with considerably less snappy dialogue. Prior to playing Superman on TV for most of the 1950s, George Reeves raises a few laughs as a young playboy, but overall, the film's gag and action counts are far too low.
