Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

There are countless films about falling in love, but this smart and bittersweet break-up movie is one of the few about falling out of it. Rashida Jones and Saturday Night Live regular Andy Samberg play driven trend-spotter Celeste and surfing slacker Jesse. These former high-school sweethearts are now 30-ish and married, but heading for divorce. It seems like the perfect break-up, though: they're still best buddies and they hang out together. Then Jesse gets involved with another woman, and everything changes. The film isn't always plain sailing: Celeste and Jesse aren't the most likeable of characters, being self-absorbed and often rather annoying, and the pacing is a little sluggish at times. But a healthy dose of wit and insight, plus tasty cameos from Emma Roberts and Elijah Wood, compensate for its flaws.
