Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Director Luc Besson is no stranger to the assassin action thriller (Nikita, Leon, Lucy), but his return to similar subject matter results in an underwhelming patchwork that offers little more than partial retreads of past glories. Supermodel Sasha Luss plays the eponymous gal with a gun, reluctantly carrying out the orders of her stone-faced Russian spymaster (Helen Mirren) while striving to extricate herself from the world of hired killers for good. CIA agent Cillian Murphy's efforts to make Anna switch sides deliver none of the intrigue Besson might have intended, and speaking of switching sides, the Sapphic subplot of lesbian seduction seems gratuitous to the point of tedium. The action scenes are elegantly shot and tightly choreographed, although they're not enough to salvage a film that comes across as half-finished, half-hearted and which would probably outstay its welcome at half the running time.
