Review

John Aizlewood

A towering figure of 20th-century literature, when Edna O’Brien died last year aged 93, the tributes were exhaustive and laudatory. Her story though, was one of complexity and extremes. O’Brien escaped Scariff — “a one-horse town with 27 pubs” — in County Clare, rapidly graduating to hosting parties in London for Marlon Brando (Paul McCartney or Judy Garland would sing) and appearing on the first Question Time, all part of a life “lived through my pen”.

The 105 minutes of the magnificent Blue Road pull together the factors that shaped her: the jealousy of her husband; the affair with an unnamed high-profile MP; her LSD adventures and so much more. What a life; what a woman.
