A terrific, warm and wonderful MGM follow-up to its smash hit The Broadway Melody, with a fabulous Arthur Freed/Nacio Herb Brown score, including most of those songs that you probably heard for the first time in Singin' in the Rain. Eleanor Powell is devastating as a dancer, and she is well backed by Jack Benny as a theatre columnist and handsome hero Robert Taylor. Taylor actually sings quite charmingly, though he's no threat to Bing Crosby. Powell taps up a storm, and her I've Got a Feeling You're Fooling picked up the dance direction Oscar for choreographer Dave Gould. In the follow-up, Broadway Melody of 1938, Powell and Taylor swap top billing, and that's the one where little Judy Garland croons Dear Mr Gable. But this is pretty swell stuff, too, and with numbers such as Broadway Rhythm (sung by a young Frances Langford) and You Are My Lucky Star, who could ask for more?
