Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Shades of Robert Bresson, Ingmar Bergman and Aki Kaurismäki colour this excellent ensemble treatise on the meaning of life. Opening with a Tolstoy story about a forged banknote, Finnish director Aku Louhimies shows how even the most insular existence is interconnected with the fates of strangers. Shiftless Niko (Jasper Paakkonen) is disowned by his unemployed father (Pertti Sveholm), alcoholic salesman Hurskainen (Sulevi Peltola) falls off the wagon and commits a hideous crime, and teacher Antti (Petteri Summanen) comes to terms with the death of his depressed cop wife (Matleena Kuusniemi). Despite its bleak patches, this avoids becoming a stock exercise in Nordic miserablism thanks to some moments of dark comedy, unexpected human decency and an agonising air of optimism, as well as Louhimies's refusal to judge his characters.
