Documentary that looks at the career of musician Brian Wilson.
In this evocative if unsurprising documentary, the often troubled genius behind the Beach Boys revisits bygone times by driving around key California locations from the group's past. His journey provides jumping-off points for him to reminisce about the band's rise to fame, the inspirations behind classic hits and less fondly remembered times when his career was beset by mental health issues. Accompanied by Rolling Stone magazine journalist Jason Fine, Wilson is engaging company, but he fails to offer any fresh insight into one of America's most successful pop acts. Director Brent Wilson (no relation) fares better, packing the film's sun-kissed soundtrack with lesser-known songs from Wilson's later solo work. Meanwhile, the interspersed talking-head interviews feature such superstar fans as Elton John and Bruce Springsteen, who articulate how Wilson influenced their own work.
