Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

A rare opportunity to see Audrey Hepburn as Rima, the mystical "Bird Girl", communing with nature and winning the heart of Anthony Perkins in the Venezuelan jungle. The film (directed by the star's then husband, actor Mel Ferrer) is, alas, misconceived. A poor screenplay fails to capture the elusive magic of the fantasy novel (by WH Hudson) from which it was adapted, and the whole thing is photographed in unattractive shades of green. However, the fragile doe-like beauty of the sublime Hepburn, followed around by a lookalike young deer, and an equally fragile, youthful Perkins, afford some fleeting pleasure, and the love story is poignant.
