Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Eyebrows were raised when Martin Scorsese announced he was going to adapt Edith Wharton's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about polite New York society in the 1870s. Yet, influenced by The Heiress and The Magnificent Ambersons, this is a directorial triumph, with the camera unobtrusively accumulating the small details that help make the story of Newland Archer and the Countess Olenska so compelling. Credit must also go here to cinematographer Michael Ballhaus and production designer Dante Ferretti. Some of the cast, notably Winona Ryder, seem a little stiff, but Daniel Day-Lewis and Michelle Pfeiffer excel in conveying the conflict between their passion and their breeding.
