Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

The writer/directors of the Matrix trilogy, the Wachowski brothers (Lana was still Larry then), serve up a phenomenal reinvention of the cult 1960s anime TV series with this turbo-charged action adventure. It stars Emile Hirsch as racing driver Speed, who uncovers a race-fixing scam when he turns down an offer to drive for a large corporation. With the help of his parents (John Goodman and Susan Sarandon) and girlfriend Trixie (Christina Ricci), our hero sets out to prove that sportsmanship lives in an era of big business manipulation. Going beyond the mixing of live action and CGI, the Wachowskis create a vibrant Day-Glo world where nostalgic pasts and the highest-tech futures co-exist in a stunning range of cinematic styles. It's rendered in an extravagant spectacle that practically jumps off the screen and will delight small boys and dads who are young at heart. The high-calibre casting, particularly Roger Allam's delicious villain, ground the thrilling antics in a striking version of reality, one that tailspins the action genre into another dimension.
