Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

A love rival causes slapstick chaos in this flimsy sequel to the 2004 royal fantasy. But the unfortunate concentration on comedy over romance means there's no heart-pounding magic in the contrived events, as American commoner Kam Heskin (blandly replacing Julia Stiles) finds her relationship with Luke Mably's stiff Danish monarch jeopardised by his scheming childhood friend just weeks before their wedding. It doesn't help that the couple have zero chemistry, which makes it appear Heskin's character has nothing to really fight for when princess Clemency Burton-Hill uses silly pranks and cattiness to try to steal her man. Without the original film's warmth, the overly convenient happy ending seems particularly hollow, though admittedly the pre-teen target audience are unlikely to mind.
