Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

A minor but charming movie from "women's director" George Cukor, here slightly overdependent on the undoubted talents and weather-beaten features of character actress and notorious scene-stealer Thelma Ritter. Ritter is marvellous, trying to pair friend Jeanne Crain with handsome radiographer Scott Brady, while trying not to let Crain know that matchmaking is her real profession. Others in the marriage market include a pre-blacklist Zero Mostel. "It will walk into your hearts," promised the advertising. For once, you won't be let down. This is an intelligent, worthwhile little movie, the kind of film a big studio, in this case 20th Century-Fox, could afford to knock off between blockbusters: these days, they can ill afford to take such a chance.
