Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This spectacular epic, set in the Elizabethan past, is memorable not just for early sword- and word-play by Laurence Olivier, but for its political context - it's a call to arms against the growing forces of Nazism in Europe. Olivier is the young nobleman seeking revenge for the death of his father at the hands of the Spanish Inquisition, and warning Queen Elizabeth (Flora Robson) about the imminent Armada invasion. Raymond Massey sneers a lot as Philip II of Spain, while director William K Howard's lavish production design works hard to divert attention from uneven dialogue matched to fervent jingoism. Great fun, though.
