Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

ET meets Lilo & Stitch in this sweet, screwball culture-clash comedy adapted from Adam Rex's children's novel The True Meaning of Smekday. Although the plot is over-familiar, director Tim Johnson (Antz) covers every base for family friendly animation and incorporates the customary values of friendship and community as he follows alien fugitive Oh (voiced by Jim Parsons) and his unlikely human ally, young Tip (a spirited Rihanna). Oh is one of the cowardly "Boovs" who are invading Earth (Steve Martin is their fearful leader) to hide from their enemy, the "Gorg". Amid the confusion Tip is separated from her mother (Jennifer Lopez) prompting a search mission and a heroic effort to save both Boovs and humans from obliteration. Parsons is impressively dextrous, with Yoda-like dialogue, intergalactic catchphrases and persistent cuteness that might eventually grate on adults, but kids will remain entranced by the bold pop art visuals, with "bubble-power" designs and continuously amusing action. Rihanna and Lopez also make terrific contributions to the soundtrack.
