Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Co-produced by François Truffaut this is a remarkable first feature from director Maurice Pialat, especially since the participants are not professional actors. This sensitive yet unsentimental tale focuses on a ten-year-old boy who is abandoned by his mother. Handed over to the social services, he is treated with dispassion and begins to become a teenage nightmare when placed with foster parents. This extremely well-observed docudrama takes all perspectives into account, while the relationship the child develops with his aged grandmother, Marie Marc, is particularly touching.
