Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Louche observation, tart dialogue and droll wit are director Whit Stillman's hallmarks, and they're all astutely called on in this sophisticated rumination on the sex and social lives of two American cousins living in the cosmopolitan Spanish city during the 1980s. Solemn salesman Taylor Nichols and loudmouth navy officer Christopher Eigeman clash with each other as much as the foreign culture while roaming the Ramblas and seducing the senoritas in a spot-on view of the Eurotrash disco scene. Crafted with care for the literary-minded and covering an interesting political canvas, Stillman's modern comedy of manners comes between Metropolitan and The Last Days of Disco in his urban romance trilogy.
