Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Peter Bogdanovich directs River Phoenix in one of his final roles, in this run-of-the-mill drama about love and fame among a group of aspiring country singers. Phoenix is fine as the young singer trying to make a name for himself in Nashville, and he's backed up by a competent young cast which includes Samantha Mathis, Dermot Mulroney and Sandra Bullock, as well as a handful of bona fide country singers. But despite the authenticity of the music and winning performances, it never really kicks into gear and ends up as a brief footnote to Phoenix's promising career which was so tragically cut short.
