Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The physical and moral consequences of going along with the crowd are examined in director Ruben Ostlund's shrewd snapshot of modern Sweden. Playing like a series of observational vignettes, this semi-improvised satire moves back and forth between the experiences and dilemmas of five unrelated sets of characters. From a pair of flirty teenage girls goading each other into increasingly outrageous actions to a schoolteacher using classroom experiments to demonstrate peer pressure, the slow-paced events offer a bleakly humorous commentary on human group behaviour. Fractured editing and the unconventional framing of scenes add to the quirky atmosphere, as deliberate obstructions and disconcerting long shots continually force viewers to rethink what they're watching. With ultra-naturalistic performances adding to the film's air of documentary-style realism, the overall effect is like eavesdropping on a stranger's most mundane moments - something you'll find either car-crash fascinating or utterly tedious.
