Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Humour and heart combine to bittersweet effect in actress Helen Hunt's confident but uneven feature debut as writer/director. Adapted from Elinor Lipman's novel, this is a low-key tale of truth and acceptance, in which Hunt plays a drab, 39-year-old schoolteacher whose desperate yearning for a baby intensifies after her husband (Matthew Broderick) leaves her. Events are complicated by her adoptive mother's death and the subsequent appearance of her biological parent - a brash talk-show host portrayed by a typically exuberant Bette Midler. Though the film is laced with acute and wryly amusing observations about modern life and relationships, it ultimately strives too hard for authenticity. Consequently, situations and dialogue often feel contrived and clumsy; particularly those involving Hunt's single dad love interest Colin Firth, whose performance veers between nobly charming and annoyingly unrealistic. Despite the flaws, there's an overall warmth and poignancy that makes this film shine.
