Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Less a record of a performance than the performance of a record, Benoît Jacquot's rarefied adaptation of Puccini's opera divides its time between lustrous monochrome footage of the cast's studio sessions with the orchestra and chorus of the Royal Opera House, and fragmented scenes meticulously staged on a deliciously artificial set. Ruggero Raimondi impresses as the Machiavellian police chief who tricks singer Angela Gheorghiu into betraying artist Roberto Alagna's sheltering of a fugitive. However, the inconsistent lip-synching proves as distracting from the music as the utterly superfluous video inserts are from an already over-ambitious visual design.
