Review

A star rating of 5 out of 5.

Director Mike Leigh's quintessential probe into the stiff British middle classes cuts a scalpel-sharp swathe through 1970s social mores and pretensions. Alison Steadman gives a masterful portrayal as Beverly, the hostess with the mostest, who invites some neighbours over for drinks and then proceeds to needle and cajole them with insensitive remarks as she gets drunker and more self-pitying. The tension rises as Beverly plays Demis Roussos songs, shows off her spit roast oven and emasculates her snob workaholic husband with obnoxious glee. Although painful, agonising and ultimately depressing, this fascinating portrait of suburban angst is a bittersweet yet still hilarious masterpiece of manners and seething emotions.
