Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This stark American indie delivers exactly what its title promises: a character study about the banality of evil. It's scored with chirpy Europop, and shot in a loose, freewheeling style that suggests a fair amount of improvisation. Brady Corbet plays Simon, a recent graduate who goes to Paris in the aftermath of a break-up. Lonely and friendless, Simon happens on a local sex club, where he becomes fascinated by one of the girls, Victoria (Mati Diop), and an unlikely relationship develops. But, instead of getting over his heartache, Simon becomes uncomfortable and skittish in Victoria's presence, revealing himself as a dark, deeply troubled individual. Those expecting easy answers may be disappointed by what happens next, but Simon Killer perhaps works best as a post-modern Talented Mr Ripley, with Corbet vulnerable and chilling as the kind of bland, unfathomable psychopath that could be plucked from the headlines on any given day.
