Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

True Blood star Stephen Moyer swaps the vampires of the Deep South for the infamous Jersey Devil in this proficient backwoods chiller. He and his less-than-enthusiastic wife (Mia Kirshner) and kids (Allie MacDonald and Peter DaCunha) embark on a camping trip to the Pine Barrens, ostensibly for Moyer to scatter his late father's ashes at what used to be their favourite holiday spot. However, it soon becomes apparent that Moyer is not a happy camper: he's haunted by a childhood encounter with the Jersey Devil - reputedly the offspring of Satan and a wayward settler - and when fellow campers start turning up disembowelled, he becomes convinced the demon is back to get him. Kirshner, on the other hand, begins to wonder whether the real monster is her husband. Director Darren Lynn Bousman has been responsible for some of the more forgettable Saw sequels, but here he ratchets up the tension nicely and keeps the viewer guessing right to the end whether the monster is back or if Moyer is emulating Jack Nicholson in The Shining.
