Review

A star rating of 5 out of 5.

Decades on, Woodstock the event is more ridiculed than revered. Yet, as Michael Wadleigh's vibrant documentary demonstrates, this concert in some muddy fields in upstate New York was much more than a simple moment in time - it was the last hurrah of hippy idealism before murder at the Rolling Stones concert at Altamont later the same year brought the dream crashing down. Wadleigh and assistant directors Thelma Schoonmaker and Martin Scorsese waded through untold miles of footage, using split-screen techniques to do justice to the goings-on - both on stage and in the audience. Time may not have been kind to some of the views espoused here, but this is a dazzling piece of film-making and an invaluable insight into the era. In addition to the likes of Jimi Hendrix, the Who and Crosby Stills and Nash, this extended cut features footage of some bands not included in the original film, including Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Grateful Dead. The quality of the performances is variable, and it's been reported that the reason the Dead didn't appear in the original release is because guitarist Jerry Garcia wasn't happy with the band's set.
