Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Who remembers Joey Dee? When this film was made he was one of the hottest names in pop music, having introduced, with his group the Starliters, the Twist at the Peppermint Lounge in New York. An energetic, pint-sized performer, Dee made two films (the other was Two Tickets to Paris) which are fascinating sociological time capsules capturing the start of the Swinging Sixties. The Twist was described as "hula-hooping without the hoop" and was not too taxing for the older generation, who embraced it with almost as much enthusiasm as the teenagers. This simple-minded but endearing homage to the dance craze was actually filmed at and around the Peppermint Lounge, "the temple of Twist".
