An unstable young woman escapes from a reformatory for very, very wayward girls and deceptively finds shelter in the kind home of a frighteningly nice and decent family. Little by little, she causes unrest and discord among the members of the household, until they are virtually fighting with each other.
Shot on a minuscule budget, Luis Buñuel considered this the low point of his career. Released in the States as The Devil and the Flesh, it was the first film he made after his stunning comeback feature, Los Olvidados. While not one of his best efforts, it is still a stinging assault on Mexico's rich and religious, in particular their indolence and hypocrisy. Rosita Quintana tries hard in the title role, showing suitable humility as she begs God for a miraculous release from jail, and irresistible sensuality as she seduces every man on Fernando Soler's ranch.
