Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Otar Iosseliani won the best director prize at Berlin for this midlife satire that suggests the grass is rarely greener regardless of the location of the fence. Irked by the petty restrictions and domestic vexations that blight his existence, welder and frustrated artist Jacques Bidou heads to Venice to visit old pal Arrigo Mozzo. But Mozzo's life is no better, despite the beauty of the city and the eccentric presence of a bogus aristocrat (played with delicious pomposity by Iosseliani himself). Comprised of small moments and wry smiles (with the opening segment a sublime collage of Tati-esque comic incident), this is observational comedy at its most congenial.
