Well-meaning, white Jonah Hill faces an uphill struggle to impress his black fiancée's father Eddie Murphy in this culture-clash romantic comedy. The path to the altar for groom- and bride-to-be (Lauren London) is strewn with social pitfalls, not least because of their respective Jewish and Muslim upbringings. Will the happy couple triumph over the obstacles of religious tradition and societal pressure? The film is essentially a reworking of the 1967 Sidney Poitier vehicle Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, but is even more clumsy and cliché-ridden. However, director Kenya Barris, who co-wrote the screenplay with Hill, manages a sprinkling of well-observed wit in scenes where he allows his actors to improvise their dialogue. Chief among the skilled cast is Julia Louis-Dreyfus who, as Hill's gaffe-prone mother, brings some welcome relief from the script's tiresome caricatures.
