Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

An edgy Cillian Murphy rises above a clichéd plotline in this spirited account of adolescent mental illness. He excels as an Irish teen who's sent to a psychiatric hospital after a joyriding suicide attempt. Events unfold like a hip hybrid of One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest and Girl, Interrupted, as the sarcastic youth disrupts therapy sessions, verbally outsmarts doctor Stephen Rea and then begins intense relationships with fellow patients Tricia Vessey and Jonathan Jackson. The drama oscillates between darkly comic boisterousness and sobering poignancy, skimming its protagonists' troubles for strong emotional effect while offering simplistic solutions. But if some scenes don't quite ring true, they're compensated for by honest performances and a slick visual style.
