Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Are the spooks for real or is the horror all in the mind? It's a well-worn path but one that writer/director Mike Flanagan walks with flair, delivering genuine scares on a micro-budget. His very believable everyday heroine is Tricia (Courtney Bell), now being pressured by the cop (Dave Levine) who investigated the disappearance of her husband - seven years before - to have him declared legally dead, in absentia. She's also pregnant with the cop's child, a complication that might rationalise the guilty, ghoulish nightmares she keeps having, but which doesn't explain the encounters her recovering-addict sister (Katie Parker) has in a local underpass. Pungent ingredients for an interesting, though remarkably restrained horror movie with a low-key soundtrack by Ryan David Leack that adds to the building atmosphere of dread.
