The first talkie verison of H Rider Haggard's romantic adventure about the explorer lured by the woman who - having bathed in the Flame of Life - becomes immortal, provides only short-lived interest. Randolph Scott is a grim-jawed explorer, Helen Gahagan a rather muted siren and the story is transferred from Africa to the Arctic Circle. The result is dialogue and acting that's as frozen stiff as the setting. Merian C Cooper (who helped King Kong shamble into legend) produces, while Irving Pichel directs.
