Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Eric Rohmer launched his Comedies and Proverbs series with this shrewd tale of tortured emotions, deceptive appearances and missed opportunities. Racked by the sight of girlfriend Marie Rivière leaving her apartment with pilot Mathieu Carrière, postal worker Philippe Marlaud begins to pursue his rival, enlisting the assistance of amused schoolgirl Anne-Laure Meury. Although Bernard Lutic's photography glories in the parks and backstreets of Paris, this is still a typically garrulous picture, with Marlaud's bemusing ramblings to Meury and Rivière's self-pitying rant being delivered to perfection. However, it's Rohmer's sympathy for these lost souls that makes everything so engaging.
