Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

A title that would probably be better suited to a musical conceals an impassioned docudrama that covers similar social territory to Michael Mann's better-known, The Insider (1999). British stage and television actor David Suchet (today best known for Poirot) and Last Tango in Paris star Maria Schneider head the mostly German cast of this international co-production. It tells the story of how a drug company executive was imprisoned for industrial espionage after taking evidence of his company's malpractice to Common Market officials. Focusing on the injustices suffered by the executive at the hands of the authorities (including their refusing him the right to attend the funeral of his wife, who killed herself while he was in prison), director John Goldschmidt offers a disturbing indictment of corporate power that's at odds with the wishy-washy atmosphere of most of his other films.
