Summary

Comedy starring Michael J Fox and Gabrielle Anwar. Doug Ireland sits at the reception desk of a swanky New York hotel by day, and at night goes home to his tiny flat to dream of a hotel of his own. Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Despite modest successes such as Doc Hollywood and The Hard Way, Michael J Fox's star certainly lost some of its sparkle following the heady days of the Back to the Future trilogy, and this uneven comedy did little to revitalise his career. He plays the smooth concierge who is desperate to open his own hotel, but to do that he needs the help of slimy millionaire Anthony Higgins, and Higgins's mistress (Gabrielle Anwar) happens to be the girl Fox loves. Director Barry Sonnenfeld - a cinematographer of note before he took the directorial reins for The Addams Family and its sequel - seems strangely ill at ease with the material, and he is not helped by a script that swings from wild farce to slushy romance. The cast, which includes Michael Tucker from LA Law and Udo Kier, the villain in Breaking the Waves, does its best, but an early check-out is recommended.
